Watch out for the Weavers
Published in Untagged by davidstevensWe landed our catch again this morning at PTA. We had a nice bit of Squid from two days fishing off Lundy, then we steamed back home on the third day to fish closer to home. We did a short trip as with Squid it is important to land them early as the shelf life is a lot shorter than with white fish. The Squid fishing was good for a couple of days but on the third day it took off quick, so we leftearly as it was not enough to pay our way. The fishing has been very up and down at Lundy this year, when we were there 2yrs ago it was a much steadier season.
One thing you have to watch for when sorting the catch is the Weaver fish. We can get quite a few in the nets and they are not easy to spot, I got stung twice in one day! The best way to treat the sting is to bath it in hot water, it can be quite a painful throbbing feeling if not treated quickly.
Lundy is quite a large island and is some 3 miles long, by just short of a mile wide. It is also quite high and can be quite a wind break in what can be a very windy and tidal area. The tide is very strong up in the Bristol channel and as it passes the island it causes some quite strong eddys and currents.
We are working to the south of Gwennep Head this week by 10-20miles. The fishing is good again, with a nice few Haddocks on the go but even though they are a good run the price is remaining low which is disappointing.
