Things That Go Bump In The Night
Published in Untagged by davidstevensWith another 24hour gap in the weather,We sailed agiain monday evening and steamed off a little further this time, to see if we could find a bit better fishing. We have so far got another 5hauls hauls in but its quite poor now and I think we will be blown in again later as they are giving severe gales for the rest of the week and through the weekend.
The fishing hasn't been to bad witha nice bit of prime and a few more haddocks and squid this time. We will hopefully land our catch tomorrow if all goes well and it will be on fridays market.
I had a good email from Ed Chesterfeild(mevegissy fishing family) the other day about the salmon we caught, he said that they had seen one too, many years back and it was the only one they had ever caught as well and they sold it in their shop.
He went on to tll me that one night they caught a live frog! so when they got back in they returned it to a local pond. That got me thinking of some of the strange creatures we see out to sea.
One night my Dad and I were mending the net in the power block, it was a lovely calm moonlit summers night and we were 30miles southwest of the scillies and we were just laying for 10minuets or so to repair a small hole in the stocking. All of a sudden we heard a splashing in the water next to us, my dad said( theirs a mouse looking up at me and I think he's still alive).
I said (how's a mouse swam all the way out here!) so we got a bucket and scooped the creature gently out of the sea. When we got him aboard it turned out to be a Bat!. So we had a pipe just above our rayburn on the old boat and he hung himself up to dry( upside down as they do).
When we got back in it was still light the next day so he never moved, but he must of left through the night as he wasn't there when we turned out in the morning. just goes to show strange things happen at sea.
