Steaming into the blizzard

Published in Untagged  by davidstevens

We got another 36hrs fishing in, the fishing was good once again, with a nice bit of prime but not a huge amount of whitefish, but the quality fish is making good money at the moment.

We started steaming back to Newlyn late last night, the wind was on the bow on the way in, as it was blowing quite hard from the north. We were seeing mainly rain all the way in, but as we approached mountsbay the rain turned to sleet, then snow. The visabiliy was quite poor for a time and for ten minuets or so we had blizzard conditions, so we couldn't resist putting the flood lights on just so we could see how bad it was, it was a bit like the footage you get on the dealiest catch programes.

Talking of dealiest catch, we have been seeing quite a few electrick and stingrays recently, this is not unusual for the time of year as they seem to swim this way about now. The stingrays are never that big, but the electrick rays can be as big as dustbin lids at times and as they are so blubbery they weigh an absolute tonne, they are usualy strong alive so they go back into the sea with a big splash.

We are sailing again tomorrow, we had quite a few jobs to do today, the trawl doors needed a spot of welding and we had to splice our rope bridles up, as the eyes were getting wore out.
