Early Start To The New Year

Published in Untagged  by davidstevens

We headed down to the boat late on new years eve, then we sailed and headed off some 30miles to the south of Newlyn. The weather had moderated from the day before when we shot and we had a lovely peaceful start to the new year and the fishing was pretty good as well.

The Penlee lifeboat and her crew had an early start as well, as the beam trawler Travessahad caught fire the day before and the fisherman were airlifted off. Fortunatly the fire had gone out, due to the crews quick thinking, as they activated the co2 system.

So the lifeboat was needed to take out the owners engineers, so they could assess the situation. They managed to pump the bilges out using the lifeboats emergency pump and they were then able to restart the engine and lift her fishing gear to the surface, so that the Billy Rowney could tow her back to Newlyn.

We carried on fishing until the early hours of this morning then we headed back in as it was starting to freshen and with only Dad, Al and myself away we were short handed so any amount of weather made it harder for us to shoot the gear.

We are hoping to sail again tomorrow after we have landed the catch lets hope we can carry on where we left off.
