The Calm Before The Storm

Published in Untagged  by davidstevens |

We sailed again late thursday afternoon after we had landed, so the fish would make Fridays market.  Alec had to come in on thursday morning early, as the sender for the autopilot had bust on the rudder, so they had to stear the boat by hand whilst towing and with a southwest 6-7 it was not easy to keep the boat on coarse.

The forecast was for a southerly 8-9 for a time so they came

No Go This November

Published in Untagged  by davidstevens |

The poor spell of weather is set to continue this weekend and with them giving sothwest 8-9 again tomorrow it looks like Alec will be blown in again. the fishing hasn't been to bad with a few haddocks and nice bit of flat and monk, but its not big fishing just picking away.

The prices are holding up which is good, but supplies have been short recently, so they should be ok this time when

Grabbed 24 Hours!

Published in Untagged  by davidstevens |

We sailed on thursday evening as the gale from the north west was starting to ease, we didn't go to far only a couple of hours off, as the forecast for saturday was poor again.

We managed to get four hauls in, the first haul was not so good as there was still a large swell running when we shot, but this eased and by the secound tow we had far better weather and the swell had droped.

Smoking Isn't Any Good For You

We started our trip last saturday night, we have been working 30-40 miles off to the ssw of Newlyn. The fishing has been reasonable but very spotty and we have been on the move constantly, trying to stop in the fishing.

We had poor weather again tuesday daytime, with  another southeasterly blow giving us a pasting again, when all of a sudden on janis's watch the fuel consumption

Not So Swell For Fishing

Published in Untagged  by davidstevens |

We came back to Newlyn this morning after a rough 3days at sea, they were giving a gale for the daylight today, so with us only being 3hours away we headed in and landed our catch. We also had some repair work to do in one of the nets, as in the poor weather the net had got damaged and the port wing needed resetting.

The Tranquility also landed with us today so we shared the transport, the

Learning The ropes

Published in Untagged  by davidstevens |

We arrived back in Newlyn last night after a 5day trip away to the south of Newlyn by 30-40miles, the trip started off slack for the first couple of days, then we moved out deeper and we got in on some good fishing. We were having a good mix of fish with some good hauls of haddocks and a steady basket of monk tails a haul, with a few megs and a sprinkling of other fish.

The weather was fine

A Bit Of Squid On The Go

Published in Untagged  by davidstevens |

We have just finished a 5 day trip off to the south of the lizzard point, the fishing was a bit slack this trip. It was a funny old tide with it remaining quite flat for a few days around the top of the spring, which is never any good for the fishing.

But there was a nice bit of squid to be had at times, the squid are getting quite large now, as this is usually the best time of year&

Wheelie bin and done it this time

Published in Untagged  by davidstevens |

We landed our catch on Tuesday evening, all was going well, getting our jobs done in good time, so we went up to take ice. As we travelled up the habour and approached the ice works, I felt a shallow thud, so I knocked the boat out of gear as I wasn't sure what it could be, but something had obviously hit the propellor. We took our ice as planned and I phoned up Gus, who does a fair bit of

A Quiet Spell

Published in Untagged  by davidstevens |

The boat is due back in this evening, Alec has had the boat away this week and with the tide cutting he headed off to the southwest. He has had good fishing again, with a nice few boxes of megrim and monk fish, so our new all purpose flat fish nets seem to be working well.

We ordered a couple of these new design nets when we were up in scotland, they have slightly less net in what we
