A Craceful Lady

Published in Untagged  by davidstevens |

The QE2 passed us up this afternoon on her way back to southampton she looked majestic in the bright sunlight and set against the calm ocean. For anyone who has never seen her at sea she is one of the most impessive sites to see and definitly the best looking cruise ship ever built, I always think how nice it would be to be onboard her rather than rolling around on our

Huge Waves on the seven stones reef

Published in Untagged  by davidstevens |
We sailed early this morning after a windy night we shot west of lands end and towed out towards the seven stones reef the swell was huge and when we hauled half a mile from the reef we saw huge waves crashing over the submeged rocks, they must of been 35-45feet and as they crashed down the white was bouncing back up at last another 15feet quite spectacular and the fishing was good.

Mixed results

Hi all the catch was landed yesterday and I have to admit to being dissapointed the price of haddocks was well down on what they should have been, we averaged 93p kg which is quite poor for a goodrun of haddock, it should have been 1.30kg at least average and as we landed just over 5tonnes that is a huge loss. As always the team at plymouth trawler agents tried there best but they said it was just

Found the haddocks

Published in Untagged  by davidstevens |
With the big tide coming up we had to head else where so it was safer to work our gear, for tose of you who are unaware how tide effcts us imagine the sea flowing like a river and trying to work a boat and the gear and keep in a straight line so we avoid wrecks and nasty hitches. It does help though at times as if we keep heading with the flow of tide we can save fuel as the vessels speed is helped

Busy month 2

Published in Untagged  by davidstevens |

Day 2 of our research trip started quietly enough just as well after the day before's events , then in the afternoon we were on our last haul of the day when suddenly the engine started to ease and I quickly knocked the boat out of gear so we went to haul our nets on the auxillary engine.

After hauling we checked the prop shaft to see if would turn by hand it wouldn't so we asuumed

Summer arrives at last

Published in Untagged  by davidstevens |
The summer squid fishery arrived at the wolf in the last few weeks, on time unlike the weather which although has been more settled the last couple of weeks its hardly summer. But at least we have stopped rolling around so much and were having good fishing for a change. The squid has been fetching a good price due to strong demand on the continent which is also helping. We use our big net to catch

Busy month 1

Published in Untagged  by davidstevens |

Hi its been busy month for the Crysta sea and her crew, we were asked to do some survey work earlier in the month for Aberdeen university, the work was to be carried out on jones bank which is 80miles west of the scillies, so we arrived early in the morning on our first day and started the survey work, little did we know how eventful this job would become.

Our first haul went well towing

A normal augast

We have been working closer to shore from 6-12miles off land as this time of year the fishing is better inside the squid has turned up at the wolf and on the right state of tide the fishing has been quite good.  Also the price has remained strong so this is a big help, Alec has been away on another vessel the Alison Kay which has come down from scotland to do a research trip to see how
