Coal mining

Published in Untagged  by davidstevens |
The last couple of days we have been catching a lot of coal. The coal is all over the grounds and gets covered and uncovered with the winds and swell. The coal is left over from the remains of ship wrecks and in the trecherous area off Lands End there has been many a shipwreck over the centuries. Fortunately for us there is some fish in the nets along with the coal! The Squid fishing has been quite

Wet suit on the quay

Published in Untagged  by davidstevens |

We stopped in today it wasn't the best of weather, wet and windy so we decided to put our rough ground net on the quay for a bit of TLC. It's been a while since we stopped so the net had taken alot of wear so all the crew and I got afast of it, but just like it, it rained all day so we ended up all soaked to the skin, but at least it was a good job done.

Alec went down the engineroom

Where have the seagulls gone?

Published in Untagged  by davidstevens |

Over the past couple of months we have noticed that there has been far fewer gulls around, I'm not saying I miss the sqawking or even the mess that we have to scrub every week off our shelter and windows after we have carried and fed them all week, but its not the same without them around. We have spoken to other fisherman and they have noticed this as well so the gulls have not fallen out with

make most of fine spell

Published in Untagged  by davidstevens |

We sailed again early weds morning and shot 12-15miles south of the wolf, a bit of monk has set in around here and the tows are fairly staight so with the big tide that is in the water we can go around with it and use it to our advantage.

We had a cable on the net yesterday which ripped our net so we had a busy day mending but other than that the weather is quiet and sea is calm, the

The weather has remained settled and is still warm, a theme of this year has been that the fishing patterns have been behind schedule about 3 weeks later than normal and this trend is continuing Alec and I think its  due to

Autumn Fishing

Published in Untagged  by davidstevens |
The Autumn Fishery has arrived up and down the coast of the South-West. Our Squid fishery has turned up along with the Dory and Gurnards and we're even starting to see a few Bass in the catch. Up to the east in Brixham and Plymouth a fair few Cuttles are being landed, so if the gales return we may head east. We can carry on working tucked up behind the headlands of the Lizard and Start Point giving

To catch a good market

Published in Untagged  by davidstevens |
We're on the way in tonight after a couple more days fishing, hopefully land our catch to a strong market as supplies have been short this week due to poor weather. We're still fishing fairly handy and we have been fishing for Squid, Gurnard, Haddock and Dory. We did have a supprise in our last haul today as we netted 20kg of large Black bream! It is a great fish to look at as well as eat
